During the age of exploration, much of our world had not et been explored. Myths and legends that we would think were crazy today were believed by many. Many sailors believed that serpent-like sea monsters existed. They thought that the water boiled near the equator, and that a ship could easily just fall off the edge of the world.

Kraken, a large sea monster was known to engulf ships and toss them into the air. Some of these are now known to most likely be a giant squid or a shark.

There is also a lobster that was said to be the size of a whale. Other monsters were “the sea bishop” and “sea monk” had heads of clergy men and the body of unidentified sea creatures.
